2510 - TEXTBOOK SELECTION AND ADOPTION

A textbook is defined as a book to be provided on loan to a given group or class of students for an extended period of time such as a semester or the school year. Materials used by or issued to a group or class of students for short-term use shall be regarded as supplementary materials not subject to formal adoption by the Board of Education, but selected and used in accordance with the provisions of policy, Supplementary Materials Selection.

Textbooks shall be chosen on the basis of their compatibility with relevant goals as set forth in the School District philosophy, their utility in support of duly established instructional programs and objectives, and their potential to interest and guide students in their learning tasks.

Concern will be shown for the special needs of the learners. This may necessitate the adoption of different texts for different students or the selection of a basal program series designed for placement of individual students at varied levels of skill development.

Textbooks which depict a multi-ethnic, pluralistic society and are free of sex role stereotyping and prejudicial treatment of racial, national, religious, or political matters shall be selected. When appropriate to the purposes of instruction, textual materials that present varied points of view concerning problems and issues of our times, international, national, or local, may be introduced.

All recommendations for the adoption of textbooks must be developed through processes which provide opportunities for teachers who will be using the books to have an effective role in their selection. Parents and/or students may be invited to participate in the selection process.

The District administration shall be responsible for establishing and following operational procedures for the selection of textbooks in accordance with the policy statements above.

Purchase of textbooks except replacements of adopted textbooks may be made only after the Superintendent's recommendation for adoption has been approved by the Board.
