5513 - CARE OF DISTRICT PROPERTY

Basic to the philosophy of the Board of Education is a respect for the rights of others. Students are urged to exercise this respect in regard to the belongings of others, including District property. Each student should realize that vandalism to District property is costly to repair and is directly related to increased District taxes.

Attempts should be made to teach students respect for property which can be done in connection with the care of textbooks and the use of District materials and equipment.

In accordance with law, students who cause damage to District property shall be subject to disciplinary measures, and their parents shall be financially liable for such damage to the extent of the law, except that students over eighteen (18) years of age shall also be liable for damage they cause.

The Board authorizes the imposition of fines for the loss, damage, or destruction of District equipment, apparatus, library materials, textbooks, and for damage to District buildings and grounds.

The Board may report to the appropriate juvenile authorities any student whose damage of District property has been serious or chronic in nature.

At WMACTC, each student will be assigned an individual locker by his/her instructor. Lockers are to be used for student clothing and supply storage only. Care and cleanliness of the assigned locker will be that student's responsibility.

Telephone Facilities

At WMACTC, a pay telephone is available in the main lobby for appropriate student use. This pay telephone is to be used for outgoing calls only. Incoming telephone calls, of an emergency nature should be directed to the main center telephone number and the calls will be related to the student during class time.

WMACTC office telephones are to be used only by the Career-Technical Center staff for business purposes.

Student Responsibility for Textbooks and Tool Kits

Each individual student who is issued a took kit and/or textbook(s) is responsible for their return in good condition.

The parent(s) or guardian(s) of the student (and/or the student if the student is eighteen (18) years of age or older) shall be financially liable for the repair of damaged tools and textbooks or for the replacement of tools and textbooks that are lost or damaged beyond repair.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines to implement this policy.
