8510 - WELLNESS

The present and future health, safety, and well being of students and staff are also the concern of the School District of Westfield. Schools have a duty to help prevent unnecessary injury, disease and chronic health conditions that can lead to disability or early death. The District will support our students and staff to take responsibility for their own health and to adopt health-enhancing attitudes and behaviors.

Nutrition Education Goals

A.Students in grades preK-12 receive nutrition education that is interactive and teaches the skills they need to adopt healthy eating behaviors.

B.Nutrition is integrated into the health education or core curricula (e.g., math, science, language arts).

Physical Activity Goals

A.Students are given opportunities for physical activity during the school day through physical education (PE) classes, daily recess periods for elementary school students, and the integration of physical activity into the academic curriculum.

B.Schools provide training to enable teachers, and other school staff to provide enjoyable lifelong physical activity among students.

Nutrition Standards for All Foods Available on School Campus during the School Day

A.The food service program is committed to provide healthy food options to all students.

B.Lunches brought from home are encouraged to meet the same guidelines as the school lunch program.

C.The School District sets guidelines for foods and beverages sold in vending machines, snack bars, school stores, and concession stands on school campuses.

Goals for Other School-Based Activities Designed to Promote Student Wellness

A.The School District encourages all students to participate in school meals program and protect the identity of students who eat free and reduced price meals.

B.The School District encourages parents, teachers, school administrators, students, food service professionals and community members to serve as role models in practicing healthy eating and being physically active, both in school and at home.

C.The School District encourages all students to participate in school meals program, i.e. the National School Lunch, including snacks for After School Program, and School Breakfast programs.

Goals for Measure and Evaluation

The School District of Westfield will periodically review the Wellness Policy and make recommendations to the Wellness Committee, the food service program, curriculum committees and other food or health programs.
