5430 - CLASS RANK

The Board of Education acknowledges the usefulness of a system of computing grade point averages and class ranking for high school students, both to inform students of their relative academic placement among their peers and to provide students, prospective employers, and institutions of higher learning with a predictive device so that each student is more likely to be placed in an environment conducive to success.

The Board of Education directs the administration to maintain class ranking. Class rankings shall be maintained starting with the 9th grade and continuing through 12th grade. Only full-time enrolled students shall qualify for class ranking status. Semester grades from student's first seven (7) semesters of high school shall be used to calculate grade point average (GPA) for class rank. Only high school level academic subjects approved by the Board, or its designee, shall be included in computing semester grades.

The person or persons (when two (2) such scholarships are awarded to the District), who receive the highest-class rank, will receive the academic excellence scholarship. The awarding of the scholarship is subject to the tie breaking procedures as outlined in Policy 5451.01.

The following special provisions apply when determining class rank:

A.

Grades received by students for courses taken at a Wisconsin technical college, virtual school courses, or university for dual credit or high school credit shall be included in determining the student's GPA.

B.

Grades received by students for courses taken at other public schools or approved alternative programs shall be included in determining the student's GPA.

C.

Grades received by students for courses taken at private or parochial schools or through home-based private educational program instruction shall be used in determining GPA.

D.

A passing grade for a pass/fail course will reflect a credit on the transcript but will not be used to determine GPA.

The designation of valedictorian will be awarded to the qualifying student with the highest grade point average, and the designation of salutatorian will be awarded to the qualifying student with the second highest grade point average. The students’ GPA’s shall be computed to as many places past the decimal point as necessary to determine one valedictorian and one salutatorian.

In the event of a tie involving the GPAs:

A.

the student with the highest composite score on the American College Test (ACT) by the end of the seventh semester shall receive the award.

If any of the students involved have taken the exam more than once, the highest composite score received prior to the end of the seventh semester, will be used.
