Administrative Guidelines
 

8800C - THE FLAG AND PATRIOTIC CEREMONIES

The following guidelines are to be followed when dealing with the flag or patriotic ceremonies:

 A.The United States flag shall be displayed over, near or in schoolhouses when school is in session.

 B.Oral recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance shall be conducted at the time and manner established by the building principal.

 C.No teacher shall be prohibited from providing in his/her classroom reasonable periods of time for activities of a moral, philosophical, or patriotic theme or from having students recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag.

 D.No student shall be required to participate in activities of a moral, philosophical, or patriotic theme if they are contrary to the religious convictions of the student or the student's parent(s) or guardian(s).

 E.No student shall be required to participate in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

 F.No student shall be intimidated or coerced into participating in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by a staff member or other student.

 G.Wording of the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag shall be as set forth in the United States Code (4 U.S.C. Sec. 4):
  "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
  (NOTE: and shall not be altered.)

 H.On or about Veteran’s Day, time shall be devoted to an observance that conveys the meaning and significance of that day in each building in the District. The time devoted shall be at least one (1) hour or, in schools that schedule class periods of less than one (1) hour, at least one (1) standard class period. The activities conducted during that time shall be appropriate to the age of the children in the school and shall be submitted to the Superintendent in advance for approval by the Board.
