8510 - WELLNESS

The Webberville Community Schools Board of Education believes that good health fosters good education. For the students of the District to be successful adults, they must have opportunities for education of healthy choices and practical strategies in choosing appropriate physical activities and nutritional habits.

Therefore, it is resolved that the Board of Education, because Webberville participates in the National School Lunch Program, will comply fully with 42 USC 1751 Section 204 by establishing the required school wellness policy by the beginning of the 2006-07 school year. The Superintendent will be responsible for assigning staff to make recommendations, with the involvement of parents, students, food service staff member/s, school administrators, and other interested community members; to the Board before the end of the 2005-2006 school year.

Specific Goals for Nutrition

Nutrition education shall be included in the health curriculum so that instruction is sequential and standards-based in accordance with the benchmarks established by the State. This education will also provide students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to lead healthy lives. Nutritional education shall extend beyond the classroom by engaging and involving the school’s food service staff and to the families who will be provided with information that is designed to encourage and reinforce curriculum taught at school.

Specific Goals for Physical Activity

A sequential, comprehensive physical education program shall be provided for students in K-12 in accordance with the standards and benchmarks established by the State. This instruction will develop knowledge, attitudes, and the skills necessary to participate in lifelong, health-enhancing physical activity.

All students in grades K-12, including those who are not athletically gifted, shall receive physical education opportunities.

The K-12 program shall include instruction in physical education as well as opportunities to participate in competitive and non-competitive team sports.

Schools shall support and encourage families and community organizations to provide physical activity outside the regular school day.

Specific Goals for Other School Based Activities Designed to Promote Student Wellness

The District shall demonstrate support for the health of all students by accessing locally available health services.

Nutrition Guidelines for all Food Available on Campus During the School Day

The District will expect that all food service employees will be properly qualified and trained in nutrition and sanitation standards and receive regular professional development in these areas.
