2430 - CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Board of Education believes that the goals and objectives of this District are best achieved by a diversity of learning experiences, some of which are more appropriately conducted outside of the regular classroom curricular program of the school.

All learning experiences offered by the schools of this District - curricular and co-curricular - should be planned and integrated toward the attainment of the Board's objectives.

The purpose of co-curricular activities shall be to:

 A.develop student initiative and provide for the exercise of responsibility;

 B.develop leadership capacities and good organizational skills;

 C.aid in the socialization of students;

 D.enable students to pursue a goal of self-realization;

 E.enable students to explore a wider range of individual interests than might be available in the regular curricular program.

For purposes of this policy, co-curricular activities shall be those activities sponsored or approved by the Board of Education but are not offered for credit toward graduation. Such activities are those which spend at least $50 in the school year and ordinarily available to all students who voluntarily elect to participate except that where eligibility requirements are necessary or desirable, the Board shall be so informed and must approve the establishment of eligibility standards before they may be operable and shall ordinarily include: band, clubs, intramural sports, student government, publications, and choir, etc.

 A.The activity shall be of sufficient variety and number to meet the wide range of interests and needs of our students.

 B.The schools shall observe a complimentary relationship to the home and community, planning a school program with due regard for the widespread activities to our students.

 C.Guidance is necessary to encourage the nonparticipants who need activities, and to prevent the over-enthusiastic from over-emphasizing activities at the cost of their academic performance.

Students identified as disabled under R.C. Chapter 3323 and the IDEA are subject to the eligibility standards established by this policy unless specifically exempted by the express terms of their individualized education program (IEP). An IEP can specify the criteria by which a grade will be determined for [a] course[s], given the individual student’s disability.

Whenever a student becomes a member of a District-established student group or national organization such as the National Honor Society, in order to remain a member, s/he must continue to meet all of the eligibility criteria and abide by the principles and practices established by the group or the organization.

The Board shall make school facilities, supplies, and equipment available and assign staff members for the support of a program of co-curricular activities for students in grades K through 12. Each co-curricular activity shall be assigned an account number in the activity fund, and no co-curricular activity shall be considered to be under the sponsorship of this Board unless has been approved by the Board on recommendation of the Superintendent.

The Board shall maintain the program of co-curricular activities at no cost to participating students, except that:

 A.The Board's responsibility for the provision of supplies shall carry the same exemptions as listed in the Board's policy on regular school supplies.

 B.Students may assume all or part of the costs of travel and attendance at co-curricular events and trips.

Excused absences from class or supervised study to take part in co-curricular activities shall be approved by the principal.

Students shall be fully informed of the curricular-related and extra-curricular activities available to them and of the eligibility standards established for participation in these activities. Students will be further informed that participation in these activities is a privilege and not a right, and that they may be prohibited from all or part of their participation in such activities by authorized school personnel without further notice, hearing and/or appeal rights (See Policy 5610.05 -  Prohibition from Extra-Curricular Activities). District-sponsored activities shall be available to all students who elect to participate and who meet eligibility standards.

The Superintendent shall prepare procedures to implement a co-curricular program.
