4122.01 - DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE

The School Board believes that quality education is not possible in an environment affected by drugs. It will seek, therefore, to establish and maintain an educational setting which is not tainted by the use or evidence of use of any controlled substance.

To help ensure a safe environment for our students and staff, it is imperative that individuals who use illegal drugs be screened out during the initial employment process. This procedure will have a positive effect on ensuring a safe and drug free workforce in the Wa-Nee Community School Corporation. For those reasons, all applicants tentatively selected for a position with the Wa-Nee Community School Corporation will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Each applicant shall be notified that appointment will be contingent upon a negative drug test result. Applicants shall be directed to an appropriate collection facility. The School Corporation shall pay the cost of the drug screen.

Each applicant shall be advised of the opportunity to submit medical documentation that may support a legitimate use for a specific drug to Wa-Nee Community Schools.

The Board shall not permit the manufacture, possession, use, distribution, or dispensing of any controlled substance, including alcohol, and any drug paraphernalia, by any member of the Corporation's support staff at any time while on Corporation property or while involved in any Corporation-related activity or event. Any staff member who violates this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Corporation guidelines and the terms of collective bargaining agreements.

The Superintendent shall establish guidelines that ensure compliance with this policy and that each staff member is given a copy of the standards regarding unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by staff and informed that compliance with this requirement is mandatory. Such guidelines shall provide for appropriate disciplinary actions, if and when needed, which comply with the terms of any negotiated agreement.
