2210C - VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

Excellence In Education is the focus of the District, and the preparation of youth and adults for saleable skills is a primary goal.

The District will establish skills committees to assist the Director in the development, revision, and evaluation of the District's vocational program.

 A.Program Advisory Committees
  These committees consist of members selected for their knowledge of the latest technology in the field. The continuous application of this technology is essential to planning and operating instructional programs. Committee members are selected by the program instructors. Members are chosen from:

  1.associations which support that particular occupation or craft;

  2.graduates of the District who are working in the filed represented by the committee;

  3.craft persons from business and industry;

  4.those directly involved in hiring individuals being trained in the field represented by the committee;

  5.instructors of the program.

A vocational advisory committee is composed of a group of individuals who represent both the business and industry community and the District. This committee offers recommendations and advice for the implementation of an instructional program which provides that student with the skills and knowledge necessary to make a smooth, realistic transition from instruction to employment.

 

This communication between District personnel and community business leaders results in an improved learning environment for the student, an enlightened view of the business community for the instructor, and a more prepared employee for the business person.

Functions of the Committees

  1.Assist in developing course content for specific occupations.

  2.Provide advice about laboratory layout, including the type and quality of equipment to be used.

  3.Refer resource people to school officials who can help in determining that instruction is relevant to the training programs needed by the community.

  4.Aid job placement students.

  5.Help evaluate specific course offerings.

  6.Assist in securing direct and indirect financial support, including donated equipment and materials.

  7.Advise school officials about the need for upgrading and retraining workers.

  8.Assist in the development of community understanding and support of vocational education.

  9.Offer counsel about the process of selecting instructors.

 B.Council/Committee Leadership Responsibilities
  The success of a Committee will depend in large measure on the leadership provided by the chairperson who should be assertive yet sensitive to the views of other members.
  Chairperson

A good meeting is one which moves expeditiously through the agenda on a time allotment understood and supported by the council or the committee. The skilled chairperson will involve all members of the group, arrive at a vote of consensus on issues, and adjourn on time. The questions of a quorum and voting procedure should be established. Some of his/her duties are to:

  1.work with school officials and the coordinator in establishing meeting dates for the year;

  2.conduct meetings in a friendly but business-like manner;

  3.cooperate with other members and coordinator in developing the agenda, which should be sent to each council member or committee member in advance of the meeting;

  4.appoint subcommittees when necessary and follow through on expected results.

 

Communications Coordinator

 

The program instructors shall serve as coordinator. Some of his/her duties are to:

  1.work with the chairperson in developing the agenda and be responsible for mailing the agenda in advance to members of the council or committees;

  2.prepare and distribute reports in accordance with agreed practices;

  3.prepare and forward necessary correspondence;

  4.coordinate communications between the council or the committee and the administration/staff.
