5895A - ACADEMIC/CAREER INTERNSHIP

Internships are individually designed. A student’s academic or career interest is matched with a community sponsor’s willingness to train and assist a student. The student is on the job on a scheduled basis, keeps a journal to document the experience, and meets with both the teacher sponsor and the career education specialist regularly.

Prior to on-site work, the student is counseled to determine current interests, attitudes, goals, and skills. Specific objectives are then written by the student sponsor, community sponsor, parent, and counselor.

In-school meetings with teacher and counselor sponsors have a three-fold purpose: 1) to assess progress in meeting student objectives; 2) to assist the student if additional skills are required to meet the objectives, and 3) to provide processing time for student gain. The counselor sponsor serves as the coordinator under the direction of the teacher. The teacher sponsor evaluates and assigns credit. The community sponsor provides information to the teacher and counselor for evaluation and training needs.

The minimum time period for an internship experience is negotiable. The maximum is one (1) semester, repeatable to a maximum of one (1) credit. Credit is awarded on the following scale: 1/4 credit for each thirty (30) hours of contact time for up to one (1) full credit per year. Internship credit does not apply toward departmental graduation requirements. Students do not receive money for work done on the job. The on-site work requirement can be met either after school or during the school day. If the internship conflicts with any class, teacher permission for the absence must be received prior to contract approval.
