The District is committed to providing parents with the opportunity each year to choose between the contemporary and informal programs for their children in grades K – 5. In order to provide for the efficient administration of both programs, however, there are registration deadlines which must be followed. In general, parents may indicate their program preference at the time they register their child in the District, or between April 1 and August 15 of each year for the succeeding school year. A student will be automatically assigned to the program they were in the preceding year, unless the parent notifies the principal’s office of the child’s current school of a change of program during this time period.
If a parent desires a change of program for his/her child during the school year, the following procedures will be followed:
The principal shall hold a conference with the parent(s) and teacher to discuss the reason(s) for the request. The principal has two (2) alternatives:
| | | 1. | The principal will request that the parent(s) discuss the program and observe in a classroom. |
| | | 2. | The principal will request the parent(s) to meet with members of the schools’ educational team (i.e. teacher, tutor psychologist) to try to mutually develop a cooperative plan of action to resolve the concern within the student’s current program placement. Any plan developed should be implemented for a mutually designated period of time. |
| | | 3. | The principal, parents, teacher, and others will meet to assess the plan’s effectiveness in meeting the needs of the student. |
| | | 4. | If, in a good faith effort he plan is not judged to have been effective, the parents’ request for a program change will be honored. |
