5511 - DRESS AND GROOMING

The Board of Education recognizes that each student's mode of dress and grooming is a manifestation of personal style and individual preference and that the appearance of any student is primarily the responsibility of the individual and his/her parent/guardian. Students are expected, however, to maintain an appearance that demonstrates a commitment to learning, promotes good school behavior, contributes to a positive atmosphere, and is not distracting to other students or school staff.

Accordingly, the Superintendent shall establish guidelines as are necessary to promote discipline, maintain order, secure the safety of students, and provide a healthy environment conducive to academic achievement. Such guidelines shall prohibit student dress or grooming practices which:

 A.present a hazard to the health or safety of the student or to others in the school;

 B.interfere with school work by creating disorder, distraction or disruption of the educational program;

 C.cause excessive wear or damage to school property.

The Superintendent may establish the dress requirements for members of athletic teams, bands, and other school groups when they are representing the District at public events.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines to implement this policy which:

 A.designate building administrators as the arbiter for compliance with student dress and grooming guidelines;

 B.instruct staff members to demonstrate by example and precept wholesome attitudes toward neatness, cleanliness, and good sense in attire and appearance.
