2380 - SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS
Students in grades 9-12 will be required to take semester examinations.
| A. | Format |
| 1. | Administrative guidelines regarding the schedule of examinations in grades 9-12 and the weight that examination performance is given in determining semester grades shall be developed by the Superintendent. | |||
| 2. | The Superintendent's administrative guidelines shall include an option, for teachers of second-semester, twelfth-grade students, to assign a senior project which, for purposes of this policy, shall be considered an examination. The project shall have the characteristics designated by the Superintendent. These characteristics shall include, but not be limited to: |
| a. | an integrative approach, which requires the student to draw together knowledge, information, or experiences acquired over more than one (1) semester in a single subject area or more than one (1) subject area; and | ||||
| b. | significant independent effort on the part of the student; such as would be considered to equal or exceed the degree of preparation required for successful completion of any standard examination; and | ||||
| c. | result in a meaningful and tangible product or performance, the preparation of which shall not supplant regular classroom instruction or activities. |
| B. | Exceptions | ||
| Students who have been enrolled in Sylvania Schools for less than one (1) full quarter in the semester for which they would otherwise be required to take examinations shall not be required to take semester examinations. Any such student shall not be prohibited from taking semester examinations if s/he elects to do so. | |||
| Second Semester Senior Exams: As an incentive to maintain a positive work ethic and good attendance up to their graduation date, seniors will be exempt from taking second semester exams if they meet one (1) of the two (2) following criteria: | |||
| "A" Criteria | |||
| A. | Senior students who earn "A’s" for third and fourth quarters. | ||
| B. | In a performance class (e.g. choir, band, orchestra etc.) students may not be exempt from the exam when a performance is required. |

Attendance Criteria |
|
A. Senior students can have no more than five (5) absences for second semester.
| B. | Students must maintain a minimum of "C" both quarters in the class they wish to be exempted out of the exam. | ||
| C. | In a performance class (e.g. choir, band, orchestra etc.) students may not be exempt from the exam when a performance is required. |
