8531 - FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS

The Board of Education recognizes the importance of good nutrition to each student's educational performance.

The Board shall provide needy children with breakfast and lunch at either reduced rate or no charge to the student.

Children shall be eligible for free or reduced price meals based on the criteria established by the Child Nutrition Program. These criteria are issued annually by the Federal government through the State Department of Education.

In accordance with Board standards, the Cafeteria Supervisor shall determine the eligibility of students for free and reduced price meals.

The schools shall annually notify all families of the availability, eligibility requirements, and application procedure for free and reduced price meals by distributing an application to the family of each student enrolled in the school.

The Board shall provide a Federal food service program for students during summer intervention programs that are mandated under Federal law. If the Board determines that it is unable to provide a Federal food service program during the summer, for financial reasons, the Board will communicate that decision to its residents in a manner it determines to be appropriate.
