5600 - STUDENT DISCIPLINE

Effective discipline, which requires respect for the rights of others, is necessary if all students are to attain a quality education. The South-Western City Board of Education delegates to school officials the authority to enforce District policies, regulations and school rules governing student conduct.

Teachers and other school employees have the right to exercise supervision and discipline over students and may exercise such powers of control, restraint and correction over them as may be reasonably necessary, within existing laws.

Each teacher should handle his/her own disciplinary problems except in unusual cases where they are referred to the principal. Teachers are not to direct or send student to the guidance office for disciplinary reasons. If students must be sent from the room, they should be sent to the appropriate school employee. This procedure should be used most judiciously.

Middle school and high school teachers are encouraged to talk to counselors concerning students with behavior problems and to suggest to students that they see their guidance counselor.

Punishments designed to humiliate a student have no place in our schools. Grades may not be affected as the means of punishment or as a reward except in accordance with the suspension and/or expulsion policy.
