5400 - EXAMINATIONS
The South-Western City School Districtís Board of Education believes that there is an educational value in taking examinations, which all students should experience, to some degree. Further, all testing should be preceded by instruction on study methods and test taking techniques.
A final examination will be given in each designated middle and high school course. The purpose of the exam is to obtain concrete data on the degree of student mastery of knowledge and/or skills and prepare students for various types of examinations they may encounter in the future.
Teachers have the right to determine the type or form of exam given. In some cases this might involve a practical of skills learned (i.e., speeches in a speech class or a lab experience in science).
Examinations should not carry such a weight in grade value as to be out of proportion to the other class work required. Exemptions from examinations offer a positive incentive for students. Exemptions should be allowed to continue on a limited basis, which would require that all students still experience examinations to some degree.
