8540.01 - VENDING MACHINES/NUTRITION

The Board of School Trustees of the Shelbyville Central Schools school corporation believes that good nutrition is important for high academic achievement. All food available for sales to students including vending machines, student stores, and fundraisers should offer food choices that provide the opportunity for students to select products that reflect healthy and nutritional principles. All food sales in the School Corporation must comply with State and Federal child nutrition program regulations. The following definitions apply to this policy:

 A.Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value
  Defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in its child nutrition regulations at 7 C.F.R. 210.11(a)(2).

 B.Healthy Beverages
  Water, milk, fruit drinks with at least fifty percent (50%) fruit juice, vegetable drinks, and 100% fruit juices.

 C.Healthy Foods
  Any food item that does not have more than thirty percent (30%) total calories from fat, more than ten percent (10%) total calories from saturated fats, or provides at least ten percent (10%) of the recommended daily value for of the following nutrients: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein, or fiber.

Vending Machine Use

 A.Elementary Schools
  Vending machines available to students shall offer only healthy beverages or healthy foods and shall not offer foods or beverages of minimal nutritional value.

 B.Middle School
  Vending machines may be operated in the middle school but must offer in total at least fifty percent (50%) healthy beverages and at least fifty percent (50%) healthy foods.

 C.High School
  Vending machines may be operated in the high school but must offer in total at least fifty percent (50%) healthy beverages and at least fifty percent (50%) health foods.

Price

Prices for all beverages and food items sold to students will be offered at comparable prices for comparable size packages.

Advertisements

Advertisement on all vending machines shall promote educational activities, physical fitness, and choice of beverage or food offered. Advertisement shall not promote one (1) beverage or food choice over other more healthy choices nor shall it promote one (1) particular beverage or food item available in the vending machine.

Availability

Vending machines may not be operational during normal school hours.
