8121.01 - PERSONAL BACKGROUND CHECK - VOLUNTEERS

To protect students and staff members, the Board may require an inquiry into the personal background of volunteers working in/or for the Corporation.

Volunteers, who may have direct, ongoing contact, four (4) or more occurrences, with students when performing services for the school, must have a limited criminal history check obtained at the building level. The volunteer will submit information for a limited criminal history check and search of the State and National sex offenders' registries.

Volunteers attending a one (1) day field trip with students must submit information for a limited criminal history check and search of the State and National sex offenders' registries. This information should be submitted at least two (2) school days prior to the trip.

Volunteers chaperoning on an overnight field trip must provide to the Corporation an expanded criminal history check for such volunteers. The definition of "expanded criminal history check" found at I.C. 20-26-2-1.5 includes a search of records from all Indiana counties in which the applicant resided, all counties in other states in which the applicant resided, and the National sex offender registry or the sex offender registries of all fifty (50) states; or a National criminal history background check and a search of the National sex offender registry or the sex offenders registries of all fifty (50) states. The volunteers are responsible for all costs associated with obtaining the expanded criminal history checks.

Screenings shall only be required one (1) time during the period of volunteer's service.

Personally identifiable information reported to the Corporation in the implementation of this policy shall not be released except as necessary to implement this policy or to defend a decision made pursuant to the policy.
