8450.01 - SCHOOL LICE

A.Classrooms can be checked by a request of a teacher or a parent that requests a check because of valid reasons.

B.Students found to have nits or live lice are to be sent home if at all possible. Parents or friends are to provide the transportation if at all possible to minimize the spread of lice.

C.If transportation cannot be provided, and the bus becomes the only means of transportation, the driver is to be notified and the student is to be seated individually on the bus.

D.The child’s "homeroom" teacher is to be notified if one (1) of their students is sent home with head lice. The teacher is not to admit that student to class unless they have a note signed by the office, or the person assigned to do a re-check.

E.Students are to be nit free before they are admitted back to class. This determination is to be made by the person doing the recheck.

F.Lice checks close to the end of the school day should be avoided unless of an emergency nature, as this can cause transportation problems.

G.Confidentiality is a very important part of any head lice policy. Only those people who need to know are to be informed of a child who has head lice. Staff and volunteers must observe this confidentiality policy.

H.Families with recurrent lice problems will be referred to the school nurse or the Logan County Health Department.

I.Financial assistance for those in severe need should be discussed with the building principal.
