8601 - PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS TO CURRICULAR/EXTRA-CURRICULAR EVENTS

Whenever the District is not able to or it is impractical to provide transportation from the Perry Schools to the site of curricular/extra-curricular event, students may drive or ride to such event in privately owned vehicles driven by students, parents, or volunteers. If such private transportation is utilized, the safety of the students being transported shall be solely the responsibility of the drivers involved and not the responsibility of the School District. The Board of Education shall not regulate and shall not guarantee the competency or insurability of the driver or the road worthiness of any privately owned vehicle used for transporting students to curricular/extra-curricular events. Students, parents, or volunteers transporting students to curricular/extra-curricular events must assume primary liability under their own insurance carriers.

No employee or supervisor of a curricular/extra-curricular activity shall be required as part of his/her job duties to transport students to a curricular/extra-curricular event in his/her private vehicle. This is a private decision for each employee or supervisor and such driving of students may be freely declined. If, however, an employee or supervisor chooses to transport students in his/her private vehicle, s/he will have primary coverage with the District insurance carrier as to liability. Property damage liability will not, however, be covered by the schools and shall be the sole responsibility of the employer/supervisor.

Students who are properly licensed may drive themselves to and from school, subject to any school regulations relating to the operation and parking of student vehicles. They may also drive to and from curricular/extra-curricular events if transportation is not provided by the school. The Board shall not regulate and shall not guarantee the competency of the driver or the road worthiness of any privately owned vehicles used by students. If a student chooses to transport himself/herself or other students or persons in his/her private vehicle, the sole responsibility for providing safe transportation shall lie with the student driver and not with the Board.

If employees, or supervisors of curricular/extra-curricular will be utilizing private transportation to events, parents/custodians must be notified of this policy and complete the Private Transportation Release Form. PARENTS/CUSTODIANS WHO DO NOT WISH THEIR STUDENT TO RIDE OR DRIVE IN PRIVATELY OWNED VEHICLES AND WHO WISH INSTEAD TO PROVIDE SUCH TRANSPORTATION FOR THEIR STUDENT THEMSELVES SHALL NOTIFY THE EMPLOYEE OR SUPERVISOR OF SUCH FACT IN WRITING. When such notice is received, every attempt must be made to see that the student in question rides only in the parent-provided transportation; however, the Board shall not be responsible for students who voluntarily place themselves in other privately owned vehicles against their parents'/custodians' wishes.
