5430 - CLASS RANK

The Board of Education acknowledges the usefulness of a system of computing grade point averages and recognizing the academic success of high school students, both to inform students of their relative academic placement among their peers and to provide students, prospective employers, and institutions of higher learning with a predictive device so that each student is more likely to be placed in an environment conducive to success.

Beginning with the 2017 graduating class, the Board authorizes an honors system (summa, magna and cum laude) to recognize academic excellence, determined by a combination of cumulative grade point average (GPA) and class rigor, for students in grade(s) 9-12. Grade point averages (GPA) are derived from the letter grade the student earns in each class. All courses (worth one-half (1/2) credit or more) are weighted on a 4.0 scale and calculated into the cumulative GPA; class rigor is determined by the level of each course. Students will earn one (1) point for each successful semester completed of an IB, AP, and/or CCP course.

The following is the criteria for students to be recognized academically at each level for the graduating class of 2017:

Summa Cum Laude: (3.8 - 4.0 GPA) and seven (7) points earned in any combination of IB, AP and/or CCP courses or completion of a two (2) year career tech program.

Magna Cum Laude: (3.65 - 4.0) and three (3) points earned in any combination of IB, AP and/or CCP courses or completion of a two (2) year career tech program.

Cum Laude: (3.5 - 4.0) and completion of a non-modified curriculum established for graduation.

Beginning with the 2018 graduating class, the Board authorizes the following criteria for students to be recognized academically at each level:

Summa Cum Laude: (3.8 - 4.0 GPA) and ten (10) points earned in any combination of IB, AP and/or CCP courses or completion of a two (2) year career tech program.

Magna Cum Laude: (3.65 - 4.0) and five (5) points earned in any combination of IB, AP and/or CCP courses or completion of a two (2) year career tech program.

Cum Laude: (3.5 - 4.0) and completion of a non-modified curriculum established for graduation.

The career tech requirement may be met with four (4) credits in PLTW Engineering Pathway or Business/Financial Pathway or any of the other two (2) year programs offered.

*Students must have passed all end of course exams or have equivalent AP/CCP/IB grades/scores to qualify for one (1) of the three (3) honors.

*A Weighted GPA and class rank can be provided if required for entrance into college/university and military academies and those institutions request such information in writing through the guidance department.
