2521 - SELECTION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA AND EQUIPMENT

The Board of Education will provide instructional media and equipment, within budgetary constraints, to implement the District's educational goals and objectives and to meet students' needs. (Media is defined as videos, telecast, cablecast, web pages, message boards, podcasts, blogs, video hosting services, printed material, digital images, video streaming and radio. Equipment is defined as TVs, VCRs, DVD players, projectors, sound equipment, radios, telephones, speakers, digital cameras, and any other equipment that presents images, sounds or both.) The primary objective of such instructional media and equipment shall be to enrich, support, and implement the educational program of the school.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for the selection and use of all educational and instructional media and equipment. In addition s/he shall periodically, provide for a systematic review, by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, of the District’s educational resources in order to ensure that they are appropriate for the current educational program. Any revisions that occur should be a result of the District’s school-improvement process and meet the following criteria:

 A.The media selected must support the Board approved curriculum outcomes.

 B.The media supports the State benchmarks and standards for the curricular area.

 C.The media has been approved for use within a curriculum and unit of study.

 D.All approved instructional materials including media will be found on the "R" drive within that particular curriculum folder.

 E.The media is age appropriate for the students viewing it.

The Superintendent recognizes that a course of study or certain instructional media may contain content and/or activities that some parents find objectionable. If after personal review of the media/movie, a parent files a complaint in accordance with Board Policy 9130 regarding either content or activities that conflict with his/her religious beliefs or value system, the school will honor a written request for his/her child to be excused from particular classes for specified reasons. The student, however, will not be excused from participating in the course or from activities mandated by the State and will be provided alternative learning activities during times of parent requested absences due to objectionable media.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for the selection and use of appropriate instructional media.
