5421 - GRADING

The Board of Education recognizes that a system of grading student achievement can help the student, teachers, and parents to assess better the student's progress toward personal educational goals and assist the student in the implementation of that progress.

Grading shall be that system of measuring and recording student progress and achievement which enables the student, parents, and teacher to learn the student's strengths and weaknesses; plan an educational future for the student in the areas of the greatest potential for success; and know where remedial work is required.

Such grades shall measure the student's progress against their own potential for achievement; the achievements of others in their class or grade; and both their own potential for achievement and the achievements of others in their class as appropriate to the grade level and subject matter.

The Board directs that the instructional program of this District include a system of grading for grades K to 12 which is consistent with the educational goals of the District.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for implementing this grading policy.

Final decision on any grade shall be the responsibility of the building principal and Superintendent.

Grade Changes

The Board and the Administration hereby recognize the classroom teacher as the person responsible for the day to day assessment of student performance and progress for all students assigned to such classroom teachers. Teachers are to monitor student performance and progress in a professional manner as designed by the Board and the Administration.

Administrators will not change grades arbitrarily. When grade changes are deemed necessary, notification of grade change will be made to the classroom teacher. The administration must retain the final authority of awarding of grades and the passing and/or retention of students.
