2510 - SELECTION OF TEXTBOOKS

In selecting textbooks for use in the District, the Board of Education will carefully consider the rights, freedoms, and responsibilities of students, parents, and teachers. Every effort will be made to:

A.Preserve the students' right to learn in an atmosphere of academic freedom.

B.Support the teachers' right to exercise professional judgment in their work; but, at the same time, require teachers to balance this right with an awareness of their responsibility to meet the educational goals and objectives of the School District.

C.Recognize the right of parents to influence the education of their children; the Board will not, however, allow the wishes of an individual parent to infringe upon the rights of the majority of the students in any class.

The Superintendent will establish textbook and/or curriculum committees, which will include representation for teachers who will use the texts, administrators, and other staff members as found desirable. Students and parents may also be asked to serve on these committees.

The final decision on the purchase of textbooks will rest with the Superintendent, subject to official adoption by the Board in certain cases.
