2451 - ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL PLACEMENT

It is recognized that some students may be "at-risk" of not completing their education. Indicators of risk may include: teen pregnancy, personal/family crisis, substance abuse, hospital discharge, underachievement, chronic truancy and/or a history of behavior problems.

Procedure for Alternative Program Placement

A.

Whenever the principal determines that a student may benefit from an alternative school placement, a referral should be sent to the building principal. The student and his/her parents should be informed, in writing, of this option, and an attempt shall be made to discuss this recommendation by telephone or in person.

B.

The building principal will screen the recommendation and application, and set up an intake meeting with the student and parents.

C.

The building principal will forward his/her recommendation to the Superintendent for approval.

D.

Students may be enrolled throughout the semester, but must remain at least until the end of the semester. Reassignment of students back to the home school will be arranged through the parent, student and the principal, with the approval of the Superintendent.

E.

Transportation to and from the alternative school will be provided by the parents.
