Newbury Local Schools recognizes the right of adult students to complete their education and earn an adult high school diploma. To this end, we adopt the following policy for the granting of said diploma.
| | A. | Adult students must be at least twenty-two (22) years of age and cannot previously have earned a high school diploma. |
| | B. | Adult students who have never attended Newbury High School must provide proof that they are current residents of the Newbury Local School District. |
| | C. | Adult students will generally not be admitted into regular classes with high school age students but may petition the Superintendent or designee for a waiver of this prohibition stating cause or circumstances that would prohibit the adult student from completion of a program outside regular school attendance. Tuition may be required if this waiver is granted.
| | | If said waiver were granted, the adult student would become subject to the same rules as regular high school students. |
| | D. | Credits for the adult diploma may be granted for night school, summer school, and correspondence courses scheduled through the Newbury High School guidance counselor and approved by the high school principal and Superintendent. |
| | E. | Equivalent high school credits may be granted for life experiences including: |
| | F. | In D and E above, a minimum of one-half (1/2) and a maximum of six (6) credits will be granted for equivalent high school credits earned in addition to those credits that already appear on the candidate’s high school transcript. |
| | G. | Adult students must complete the minimum required high school curriculum including required courses and minimum credits required at the time of the adult’s graduation. |
| | H. | Evaluation of equivalent high school credits will be done by a Certificated Staff Committee which shall include an administrator, a counselor, regular education teachers, and vocational education representative from Auburn Career Center. Such evaluation will consider number of hours spent in instruction, skills learned and demonstrated, and other like items. Documentation may be required. |
| | I. | For adult diplomas to be granted after August 1, 1993, adult students must have passed all State required Ninth Grade Proficiency Tests or Tenth Grade Graduation Qualification exams. Provisions will be made for adult students to take the tests during evening hours if requested. |
| | J. | Adult diploma recipients may be permitted to participate in the regularly scheduled commencement ceremonies. No graduation fees will be charged adult diploma recipients. |
| | K. | Records will be retained by the high school guidance office and transcript service will be available in the same manner as it is performed for regular graduates. |
| | L. | Candidates will be granted the adult diploma after the Certificated Staff Committee has recommended all credits to be granted, the high school principal has approved said recommendation, the Board has voted to grant the diploma, and the candidate has been notified. |
