2629 - HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM INCENTIVES
The Board of Education supports the implementation of the more extensive graduation requirements specified in the State School Aid Act of 1979 and Public Acts 123 and 124 of 2006.
The Board adopts the provisions of subdivision (a) as graduation requirements for all students graduating in or after the school year 1991 and through 2010.
Effective through graduating class of 2010:

Three (3) years of English or communication skills |
|
|
Three (3) years of mathematics |
|
|
Three (3) years of science |
|
|
Three (3) years of social science |
|
|
One (1) year of health or physical education, or both |
|
|
Two (2) years of foreign language, fine or performing arts, vocational education or practical arts, or any combination thereof |
|
|
One (1) semester of computer education |
|
The Board will seek to obtain the additional incentive described in subdivision (b) of Section 21 of the School Aid Act. The Superintendent shall prepare, and submit for Board approval, the plans necessary to meet the State requirements described in this section of the Act.
For students graduating in 2011 and thereafter the Michigan Merit Curriculum requires sixteen (16) credits for graduation, which could be acquired through subject and integrated (mixed subject) classes, as well as, career and technical education programs. The Board has designated listed curriculum as required for graduation.
Credits Include:
| A. | Four (4) credits of English Language Arts aligned with course content expectations developed by MDE. | ||
| B. | Four (4) credits of mathematics including Algebra I; Geometry; Algebra II, including one (1) credit in senior year with course content expectations developed by MDE. | ||
| C. | Three (3) credits of Science including Biology; physics or chemistry; one (1) additional science credit with course content expectations developed by MDE. | ||
| D. | Three (3) credits of Social Studies including .5 credit in civics; .5 credit in economics; U.S. history and Geography; World History and Geography with course content expectations developed by the MDE. | ||
| E. | One (1) credit of physical education/health credit with course content guidelines developed by MDE. | ||
| F. | One (1) credit of visual, performing arts with course content guidelines developed by MDE. | ||
| G. | One (1) year of computer education. |
Additional Graduation Requirements:
| A. | In addition to the credits outlined above, (5) credit hours in electives, or career and technical education programs must be completed and twenty-two (22) credits awarded. | ||
| All students graduating in 2008 and thereafter shall, as a condition of graduation, participate in the Michigan Merit Examination, unless excluded under the guidelines established by the State Department of Education. | |||
| B. | Students must take an on-line course or learning experience. The Board of Education, therefore, delegates responsibility to District administration to implement, support, and sustain online courses by taking into consideration the following premises from which to deliver such instruction and build a model capable of emulation by other: | ||
| Michigan Merit Curriculum Guidelines, defines an online course as "a course delivered through an intranet or internet connection that...is organized in a coherent, sequential manner, has goals, objectives, strategies, and assessments that are aligned with State standards, benchmarks and expectations...(that are) comparable in rigor, depth, and breadth to traditionally delivered courses." | |||
| Beginning with the Class of 2016 (Third graders in Fall 2006), students will need to complete two (2) credits of a world language in grades 9-12; OR have an equivalent learning experience in grades K-12. |
