2370 - EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS
The Board of Education recognizes the need to provide alternative means by which students achieve the goals of the District.
An optional plan to meet the recognized educational needs of a student shall be approved by the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall prepare a plan of educational options for use in meeting special needs.
Such options may include, but not be limited to, tutorial program, independent study, correspondence courses, educational travel, mentorship programs, summer school, early college entrance, internet, digital broadcasting, or satellite course work offered by the school, any regionally accredited college, Michigan Virtual High School, or other acceptable satellite course offering as determined by the Superintendent. Correspondence courses may only be taken by students who have failed a similar course at Mount Clemens High School, if the student needs the class to graduate, and cannot otherwise take the class again at the high school, or take the class in summer school. None of these options may be used by a student to avoid taking required courses offered in the school's regular curriculum.
Credit may be granted to the student upon complete evaluation of the program.
The credit shall be placed on the student transcript. The amount of credit counting toward graduation shall comply with the District graduation requirements. The District grants a diploma only to students who are lawfully enrolled as students in the District, and credit will not be added to the transcript of a student who is no longer enrolled in the high school. If the student no longer attends the high school, it will be necessary for that student to either re-enroll, or enroll in an adult education program to complete necessary credits for graduation.
For any twelfth (12th) grade student who wishes to take one (1) or more courses not offered by the District at a post-secondary institution, the Board shall pay that portion of the tuition and fees stipulated by statute providing s/he satisfies the necessary conditions set forth in the administrative guidelines.
The Superintendent shall establish administrative guidelines whereby each educational option is properly analyzed, planned, and implemented and complies with all applicable requirements of the State.
Accepting High School Credits
A student's request to earn credits through summer school in other districts, correspondence schools, Internet-based instruction or through dual enrollment programs at local colleges or universities may be approved by a high school counselor only if the counseling staff and high school administrator has pre-approved the student's request to earn credits through summer school in other districts, correspondence schools, Internet-based instruction or through dual enrollment programs at local colleges or universities.
Mount Clemens Community Schools will also consider credits from other schools previously attended by an incoming student, if those credits were earned in a reputable program of study approved by one (1) of the six (6) regional accrediting agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education, including the North Central Accreditation Association, or the New England, Middle States, Southern, Northwest and Western Associations, or if the school appears on the listing of regionally approved schools at the International Council of School Accreditation Commission.
If the institution is not regionally accredited, Mount Clemens Community Schools will also consider credits from other schools previously attended by any incoming student, only if the student can demonstrate that those credits were earned in a reputable program of study whose compliance with the following standards is not less than that practiced by Mount Clemens Schools: the qualifications for the teachers; the methodology used for evaluation of student work; the length of time it generally takes for students to earn credits; whether students are provided a transcript; whether students are issued textbooks; the amount of direct contact; instructional time the student has with the instructor and with other students.
