2431.03 - PARENT/GUARDIAN CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PARTICIPATION IN INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The Board of Education supports a philosophy of athletic competition that is guided by the highest standards of good sportsmanship and fair play. To this end, all parties (teachers-coaches, supervisors, athletes, parents, and spectators) must recognize that students’ participation in sports and extra-curricular activities are an extension of the classroom and that parental participation in these activities is a privilege. For this reason, the parents/guardians of students (and their guests) must demonstrate behaviors that support this atmosphere. Therefore, the District expects the parents/guardians of the students (and their guests) to adhere to the following guidelines.
Parents and other spectators
SHOULD NOT:A. | ridicule or berate players, coaches, officials, or other spectators;
B. | engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with an official, coach, or player – for example, booing, taunting, using profane language or gestures, etc.;
C. | encourage or condone any behavior or practice which could endanger the health or well being of any participant;
D. | coach from the sidelines;
E. | confront coaches in an inappropriate/antagonistic manner before, during, or after games/practices. Instead, parents should take time to talk with coaches in an appropriate manner by scheduling a meeting at a time and place convenient to both persons. The use of impersonal, electronic, or handwritten means of expressing concerns is not an acceptable substitute for effective, cooperative, face-to-face communications. |
Parents and other spectators
SHOULD:A. | understand that their attendance provides them with the opportunity and privilege to observe an athletic or extra-curricular event and not to criticize players, coaches, or officials;
B. | remember that interscholastic athletics and extra-curricular activities are an educational opportunity for students;
C. | be a positive role model and encourage sportsmanship by giving support to and showing respect for all players, coaches, officials and spectators;
D. | support the decisions of coaches and officials;
E. | appreciate the efforts of the players, coaches and officials;
F. | show respect for opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups;
G. | treat all players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability;
H. | reinforce the District’s drug and alcohol free policies and refrain from using alcohol and other drugs before or during contests;
I. | be a "team" fan, not a "my child" fan – i.e. encourage the attainment of team goals, rather than only individual goals;
J. | encourage their child(ren) to discuss any problems with the coach before the parent discusses the problems with the coach.
K. | understand that criticism and disrespect not only undermine the purpose of interscholastic sports, but the very behavior the parents are trying to teach their child(ren). |
