5751 - PREGNANT STUDENTS

No student, whether married or unmarried, who is otherwise eligible to attend the schools of this District shall be denied an educational program solely because of pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy-related disabilities, or actual or potential parenthood.

The Board of Education reserves the right to require as a prerequisite for attendance in the regular classes of the schools and the co-curricular program of the schools that each pregnant student present to the Superintendent her physician's written statement that such activity will not be injurious to her health nor jeopardize her pregnancy.

A pregnant student who does not wish to attend regular classes or is physically unable to do so during her pregnancy may, on her request, be assigned to an alternate educational program. Such program may include individual (home) instruction and a program of instruction which may be offered by another school district or institution designed to respond to the special educational needs of the pregnant student as well as to continue her regular education.

The Board may assign a student in an advanced stage of pregnancy to home instruction when considerations of her physical safety require that she not attend regular school classes.

A student who has received an alternate educational program for reasons associated with her pregnancy shall be readmitted to the regular school program upon her request and the written statement of a physician that she is physically fit to do so.

The Superintendent shall develop procedures for the implementation of this policy which shall include:

 A.proffering an additional counselling services to help the pregnant student plan her future wisely.

 B.cooperation with community resources to assist the pregnant student.

 C.communication with the parents of pregnant students.

 D.development of a curriculum for the alternate educational program to which the pregnant student may be assigned on her request.

 E.designation of a qualified staff member to receive the physician's statement regarding the examination and health of a pregnant student.
