5310 - HEALTH EXAMINATIONS
The Board of Education shall require that students of this District submit to health examinations to:
| A. | protect the school community from the spread of communicable disease. | ||
| B. | verify that the student's participation in health, safety, and physical education courses meets his/her individual needs. | ||
| C. | verify that the learning potential of each student is not lessened by a remediable physical disability. |
Each student attending school for the first time shall be examined for physical defect by a personal physician, whose report shall be given to the County Health Board by the building principal.
Each student transferring to the schools of this District shall present evidence of a physical examination conducted previously or shall submit to a physical examination conducted by a personal physician or the Health Board.
Each candidate for a place on a school interscholastic athletic squad or team shall be given a health examination by a licensed physician prior to the first practice session.
As part of the health services program, the following additional screening programs shall be administered to students to aid in the identification of disabilities:
| A. | growth and development evaluation, | ||
| B. | vision screening, | ||
| C. | scoliosis screening, | ||
| D. | audiometric testing. |
A student who presents a statement signed by his/her parent or guardian that a medical examination interferes with the free exercise of religious beliefs shall be examined only to the extent necessary to determine whether s/he is ill or infected with a communicable disease or to determine fitness to participate in any health, safety, or physical education course required by law.
The Superintendent shall instruct all staff members to observe students continually for conditions that indicate physical defect or disability and to report such conditions promptly to the building principal.
The Board shall directly notify the parents of students, at least annually at the beginning of the school year, of the specific or approximate dates during the school year when any nonemergency, invasive physical examination or screening is scheduled or expected to be scheduled for students if the examination or screening is: (1) required as a condition of attendance; (2) administered by the school and scheduled by the school in advance; and (3) not necessary to protect the immediate health and safety of a specific student, or other students.
The term "invasive physical examination" means any medical examination that involves the exposure of private body parts, or any act during such examination that includes incision, insertion, or injection into the body, but does not include a hearing, vision, or scoliosis screening.
Unless the physical examination or screening is permitted or required by an applicable State law, parents may refuse to allow the Board to administer a nonemergency, invasive physical examination or screening upon written notification to the Board within three (3) days after receipt of the Board's annual public notice.
