8453.01 - CONTROL OF BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS

The School District, in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 DFR 1910.1030, has developed an exposure control plan which specifically addresses the following components:

 A.Exposure Determination
Defines which employees by job description have been determined to have occupational exposure according to OSHA guidelines.

 B.Exposure Control Methods
The implementation and maintenance of engineering controls, work practice controls, and universal precautions standards will serve to minimize the risk of employee exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.
Where these methods cannot completely eliminate the risk of exposure, personal protective equipment appropriate to the task being performed will be available to employees at risk.
Employees at risk of exposure will receive training in exposure control methods and use of personal protective equipment as required by OSHA guidelines.

 C.Post-Exposure Evaluation and Follow-Up
Employees who are involved in an incident involving blood or other potentially infectious materials will be required to complete documentation of this incident and immediately report the incident to the immediate supervisor. The immediate supervisor shall report the incident to the District’s Exposure Control Plan Coordinator by the end of the day. A determination of whether the incident constituted an exposure will be made.
Employees who are determined to have been exposed, by OSHA definition, will be offered a medical evaluation by the School Board designated physician, and appropriate testing and treatment will be instituted. All employee exposure records will be maintained in accordance with OSHA guidelines.

 D.Hepatitis B Vaccine
The Hepatitis B Vaccine series will be made available at no charge to those employees who have occupational exposure according to OSHA guidelines.

 E.Communication to Employees
Appropriate training will be conducted for all employees determined to be at risk at the time of initial assignment to tasks when occupational exposure may take place and at least annually thereafter.

 F.Recordkeeping
Training and medical records will be established and maintained by the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources or his/her designee for those employees determined to be at risk in accordance with OSHA standards.

 G.Implementation and Annual Review
The Superintendent shall designate the School District's Exposure Control Plan Coordinator who is responsible for implementation and annual review of the Exposure Control Plan that comprises the administrative guidelines for implementation of this policy.
