2431.01 - ACADEMIC STANDARDS FOR PARTICIPATION IN NONCREDIT ACTIVITIES
The Board sponsors, supports, and encourages both District-wide and building-based activities, programs, and events which expand opportunities for students' learning and recreation. The Board, however, believes that the first priority for all students is being successful at meeting academic requirements and expectations.
A student will not be allowed to participate in the nonacademic activities of the school or the District unless s/he has first demonstrated satisfactory academic performance. The specific guidelines for determining a student's eligibility to participate may vary from one (1) activity to another and from one (1) grade level to another. The guidelines, however, shall be consistent by activity and grade level throughout the District.
Academic eligibility requirements shall apply to interscholastic and intramural athletic programs, participation in clubs and student government, drivers education, and special trips and programs which are not required parts of a school or course curriculum.
At the secondary level, an academic standard shall be developed for all students that participate in interscholastic athletics that incorporates grade point average calculations (GPAs) and specific course grades. Interscholastic athletic eligibility shall first be determined on a term basis and monitored throughout the time of athletic participation. Administrative guidelines shall be developed to establish a system for monitoring athletic academic eligibility. Eligibility for programs and activities conducted during the summer recess will be based on the academic grades of the final term of the school year.
Academic standards shall be developed for all students that participate in intramural athletic programs, clubs, student government, drivers education, and special trips and program which are not required parts of a school or course curriculum.
At the elementary level eligibility shall be determined for each event, program, and activity. For activities extending over a period of time, eligibility may be determined on a week to week basis. At the elementary level, where numerous indicators as well as standard letter grades may be used, eligibility shall require an overall determination of satisfactory work.
The eligibility standards are to apply to all students. Students who have needs for adjusted academic achievement expectations are to have these needs incorporated into the teacher determined grades. The eligibility standard is not adjusted to accommodate unique needs.
Administrative regulations are to be established as needed to fulfill the intent of the policy. The administrative guideline shall provide for an appeal process. The appeals process is not intended to be the process for contesting a specific academic grade. The final decision of the appeals process shall not be subject to Board review.
