5113.03 - SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

The Board of Education acknowledges that the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) provides that the parents/guardians of students enrolled in a Title I school that has been listed for "School Improvement" for two (2) or more years, have right to Supplemental Educational Services (SES). Supplemental Educational Services are additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools in the second year of improvement, corrective action, or restructuring. These services, which are in addition to instruction provided during the school day, may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation and other supplemental academic enrichment services that are consistent with the content and instruction provided by the Lakewood City Schools and are aligned with the State's academic content and achievement standards. Supplemental Educational Services must be high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement.

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as reauthorized by NCLB, calls for parents of eligible students attending Title I schools that have not made adequate yearly progress (AYP) in increasing student academic achievement for three (3) consecutive years to be provided with opportunities and choices to help ensure that their children achieve at high levels. Supplemental Educational Services provide extra academic assistance for eligible children outside of the regular school day. Students from low-income families who are attending Title I schools that are in their second year of school improvement, in corrective action, or in restructuring status are eligible to receive these services.

The Board provides supplemental educational services according to Federal guidance.
