2521 - SELECTION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

The Board of Education shall provide instructional materials and equipment, within budgetary constraints, to implement the District's educational goals and objectives and to meet students' needs. The primary objective of such instructional materials and equipment shall be to enrich, support, and implement the educational program of the school.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for the selection of all instructional materials and equipment. In addition s/he shall periodically, provide for a systematic review of the instructional materials resources in order to ensure that they are appropriate for the current educational program. Any revisions that occur should be a result of the school-improvement process.

The evaluation and selection criteria for instructional resources may include:

 A.Alignment with the Michigan Curriculum Framework: Teaching and Learning Standards

 B.Alignment with the Michigan Curriculum Framework: Assessment Standards

 C.Alignment with established district textbook criteria

 D.Determination of high level of rigor and relevance for students

 E.Incorporation of differentiated instruction strategies, supplemental components to meet the needs of all students (at-risk and advanced), and/or tools for interventions

 F.Incorporation of resources that shall be suited to the varied interested, abilities, reading levels, and maturity levels of the students to be served

 G.Whenever possible, incorporation of opposing views and/or appropriate handling of controversial issues so that students may develop the practice of critical thinking

 H.Whenever possible, resources should be free from bias, present many perspectives (religious, ethic, cultural), and their contributions to American heritage

 I.High quality and durability appropriate to their intended use and longevity

 J.Cost of selected material is comparable to other resource options

NOTE:

 A.Students shall be held responsible for the cost of replacing any materials or properties which are lost or damaged through their negligence.

 B.Cost of materials may be charged for materials used in those activities beyond the basic curriculum in which a student elects to participate, particularly in shop activities where the product becomes the property of the student.
