7540.05 - DISPLAY OF STUDENT WORK
Materials created through the work of students that exhibit their accomplishment with regard to various curricular achievements should be recognized by teachers, visitors, parents, and peers. Many schools wish to display student works in the classrooms and hallways. Due to the responsibilities of our custodial staff, maintenance, buildings and grounds as well as a variety of codes associated with fire prevention, the following guidelines will be followed with regard to the display of projects:
| A. | Not more than thirty-three percent (33%) of wall space shall be covered with student materials in hallways or classrooms. Spacing should be such that areas near fire exits and windows have a space of at least three (3) feet in any direction that exhibits nothing with the exception of evacuation/emergency diagrams. | ||
| B. | Flammable materials such as crepe paper shall not be used unless the material is marked and treated with "fire retardant" or "non-flammable". | ||
| C. | No objects shall be suspended from the ceiling, ceiling tiles, ceiling grids. | ||
| D. | No objects, paper, or colored transparent or translucent materials shall be placed on or in ceiling tiles or light diffusers. | ||
| E. | Nothing shall be suspended from sprinkler supply lines, sprinkler head, or alarm devices. | ||
| F. | No painting of any alarm device, emergency light, pull station, light switch or wall plate cover, window frame or any other fixture shall occur. | ||
| G. | Student materials shall not be painted, marked, dyed, glued, or mechanically attached on permanent walls, doors, ceilings, floors or other fixtures that are part of the building. Exceptions may be made for mascots in gymnasiums, entrance, or for curricular murals for permanent display by a professional painter/artist for long-term use. Media used must reflect the temporary nature of the displays and shall be adhered on tack boards, tack strips, display cases, or adhered to walls with materials that will not require special tools, solvents, or chemical for their removal. Readily removable decals are acceptable if the theme is appropriate. | ||
| H. | Student displays shall be removed from the building not later than the end of each school year to prohibit problems with summer cleaning. Student displays not removed will be disposed of. | ||
| I. | Outdoor material displays shall not interfere with the cleaning or maintenance of the building or grounds. Items so displayed will be removed without notice and disposed of. | ||
| J. | Any changes or alterations to any portion of the building structure must be approved by the building principal then submitted to the Administrative Assistant for Support Services for approval prior to initiating the display. The administrative assistant will consult with the Superintendent who ultimately has the final decision regarding the project. | ||
| K. | Any mural that displays a controversial theme, historical character, or political or religious idea, must be approved by the Administrative Assistant for Curriculum Services prior to being painted by a painter or artist. The administrative assistant will consult with the Superintendent who ultimately has the final decision regarding the display. |
