7250.01 - MEMORIALIZATION AND COMMEMORATION OF STUDENTS AND STAFF
The loss of students, friends, and cohorts is a difficult event. Being together in the school setting establishes strong ties to those that you teach and work with. Those that make a lasting impression on us or have made remarkable accomplishment deserve to be remembered by those that they have helped and influenced.
The Jennings County School Corporation recognizes the need for this type of remembrance as recognition for past works, accomplishments, and to sometimes note an untimely death before one's potential is realized. But, due to the nature and function of a school it must be done in a manner that does not interfere with the efficient normal operation of the school. Therefore the following guidelines shall be established to provide guidance for any and all future requests of this nature as well as dealing with established monuments that do not fall into the category of facility commemoration as outlined by current Policy 7250.
| A. | No memorial shall be made in the form of stones, concrete, brick and mortar, or other types of inorganic item that may perpetually endure the elements. No item that causes a change in procedures for cleaning, mowing, maintenance, student or staff travel, parking, etc… shall be considered. This would include but not limited to, plaques, signs, stones, benches, banners, or other methods of similar type of display. | ||
| B. | Existing items that were installed prior to the adoption of this policy will be displayed for not less than five (5) years. Once this time has been reached the stones will be relocated to a central area to be re-claimed by the family or installed in a small memorial area at a location to be determined on Jennings County School Corporation Property. | ||
| C. | Appropriate items would be a flower, tree, or shrub with a metal (or other persistent material) tag that would identify the person being memorialized and why. The tag and spike to mount it in the ground cannot extend more than eighteen inches (18") above the height of the ground and the tag portion where printed cannot exceed 5" X 7". No garish colors, sayings, mottos, political statements, religious symbols or inappropriate quotations may be included within the text. | ||
| D. | Any and all organic memorials of this type must be acceptable to the building principal and their location approved by the administrative assistant for support services to accommodate the location of utilities, mowing, and other services. | ||
| E. | All existing stones and plaques will be removed and relocated from their existing locations not later than May 1, 2020. |
