5420.01 - PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

The Board believes that quality home-school relations are needed in creating an educational environment that effectively impacts and supports student success. Both school staff and parents are encouraged to initiate and hold conferences that mutually focus upon the student's academic achievement and well-being.

Regularly Scheduled Conferences

Conferences are scheduled regularly during each semester. During the first semester, it is encouraged that conferences be held for all students within the Corporation. During the second semester, conferences are held primarily for students who are at academic risk. During these regularly scheduled periods, specific dates and times are set aside to facilitate holding these conferences.

Other Scheduled Conferences

At other times during the school year, parents or school staff may initiate conferences. These conferences may be held prior to actual class instructional time at the beginning of the day, during instructional planning time, and/or after actual class instructional time at the end of the day. Conferences may also be held during instructional time provided the building administrator approves and a school staff member is available to monitor the class.

Conference Conduct and Purpose

Any conference should be conducted in a courteous and professional manner while remaining focused on the purpose of the conference. This means the conference:

 A.is to focus on the student's academic progress and well-being;

 B.is to be conducted in a professional and confidential manner;

 C.is to be scheduled in such a manner to allow both the staff member and the parent(s) to know who and why others may be present prior to the holding of the conference;

 D.may also result in an "action plan" for student improvement.

Any conference that cannot be conducted in this manner is to be adjourned and reconvened at a later date with appropriate school officials and/or support services personnel present.
