4164 - SAFETY OF CHILDREN AND THE REQUIREMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FOR TRANSPORTATION EMPLOYEES

All bus drivers must fulfill the requirements of their job description and job objective, which provides for the safe, efficient, and courteous transportation of students.

All bus drivers must meet the requirements of Board Policies 4210, 4213, 4120.01, and all other policies that are required for the bus driver to maintain a standard of care for the supervision, control and protection of students under their individual and collective care.

All bus drivers must follow the driver requirements in the Ohio Pre-service School Bus Driver Training Manual and review the pre-service manual and the Ohio Pupil Transportation Manual from time to time and at least on an annual basis.

All bus drivers are to count the passengers when they board the school bus. The bus driver is responsible for knowing which students, and how many, are on their bus at all times.

All bus drivers must count the exiting passengers as they go down the steps, then count them again when they reach their place of safety.

Should a question arise on whether a student is on the bus and the bus driver is not certain s/he will contact the bus garage and find a safe place to stop the bus and confirm the child's presence at the earliest time.

Should the bus driver receive an inquiry from the bus garage regarding the whereabouts of a student and s/he is not certain whether a student is aboard, the bus driver will contact the bus garage and find a safe place to stop the bus and confirm the child's presence at the earliest time.

If all the drivers receive an inquiry from the bus garage regarding a general request to check the bus for a missing student, all bus drivers will find a safe place to stop the bus and confirm whether the child is on his/her bus. The results of that review shall immediately be reported to the bus garage.
