8452 - AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR: MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
The Board of Education is sensitive to the reality that medical emergencies arise that require the use of an automated external defibrillator ("AED") and authorizes the acquisition and use of these important medical devices in accordance with the Physical Fitness Facility Medical Emergency Preparedness Act.
The District will implement and maintain a written Medical Emergency Plan in accordance with State statute and implementing regulations for all physical fitness facilities. The Plan will detail how to respond to medical emergencies occurring at the physical fitness facilities during the hours the facility is open for use by the public.
The District Medical Emergency Plan must insure that at least one (1) AED is provided at its physical fitness facilities as required by law. The deadlines for installing an AED at the District’s physical fitness facilities are included in AG 8452.
For the purpose of the District Plan and in accordance with State statute, "physical fitness" facility shall be defined as any of the following facilities operated by the District where the District employs at least one (1) staff member for the purpose of supervision: a swimming pool; stadium; athletic field, track and field facility; tennis court; basketball court; or volleyball court; football stadium; soccer field; baseball diamond; or other such facilities located adjacent thereto or defined by regulation. If the facility serves less than 100 people, it is excluded from the definition of physical fitness facility.
The District’s Medical Emergency Plan must provide the necessary start-up training as well as recurrent training that insures that physical fitness facility staff understands the role of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of automated external defibrillators.
A copy of the District’s Medical Emergency Plan must be kept on file with the Illinois Department of Public Health. In addition, the District will update the written Medical Emergency Plan whenever there is a change in the structure occupied by the facility or in the services provided or offered by the facility that would materially affect the facility’s ability to respond to a medical emergency. The updated Plan will be filed with the Illinois Department of Public Health.
