5525 - STUDENT SAFETY

The safety of students shall be assured through close supervision of students in all school buildings and grounds through special attention to the following:

 A.maintaining a safe school environment;

 B.observing safe practices on the part of school personnel and students, particularly in those areas of instruction or extra-curricular activities which offer exposure to accident or injury such as laboratory courses in science, shop courses, and health and physical education;

 C.providing, through the services of the school staff, first aid care for students in case of accident or sudden illness.

In addition to the above safety measures, school personnel shall watch for suspicious strangers loitering in or near school buildings or seated in parked automobiles nearby. The building principal shall notify the police if the circumstances warrant.

Teachers shall instruct students not to accept gifts or automobile rides from strangers and the students will also be instructed to tell the teachers, their parents, police, or school patrols of any suspicious strangers.

Responsibility of the District for the supervision of students does not extend to places or times when they are traveling to or from school except in District authorized and provided transportation, or while waiting for the school bus, nor while they are in the school buildings engaged in activities sponsored by agencies other than the District.
