5463.01 - ADMISSION OF STUDENTS FROM NON-CHARTERED OR HOME SCHOOLS
If a parent wishes to have his/her child return to the School District, s/he must follow these enrollment guidelines. The Superintendent shall make the recommendation for grade placement.
Students seeking admission into the School District from a non-chartered or home school may be required to take an assessment. The sole purpose of these assessments is to determine the proper grade placement of the student.
The intent for any home/non-chartered schooled student to enter the School District must be given to the Superintendent no later than the four (4) weeks prior to the expected date to enter. This provides time for the School District personnel to conduct a thorough placement study. If the four (4) week notice is not provided, a temporary placement decision may be made by the Superintendent while a placement review is being conducted. Students are encouraged to enroll at the beginning of a semester.
Students will be enrolled pending the Superintendent’s review of documentation that the student has mastered the content of each course. In making a grade placement decision, the Superintendent may consider:
| A. | The most recent academic assessment report for each class taken provided by the parent/guardian. The assessment should include: |
| 1. | a portfolio of work done; | |||
| 2. | examples of tests and test scores; | |||
| 3. | resources and books used in the course; | |||
| 4. | standardized test scores demonstrating the student’s ability; | |||
| 5. | course(s) of study completed; | |||
| 6. | the number of hours devoted to each course of study. |
| B. | Requiring the student to take any or all of the standardized tests that are regularly scheduled for School District students of similar age. | ||
| C. | Requiring a student enrolling in grades 6-8 to take final exams for grade level placement. | ||
| D. | Requiring a student enrolling in grades 9-12 to take final exams for credit only. | ||
| E. | Other evaluation information that may include interviews with the student and the parent/guardian. |
All home-based, non-chartered courses will be given a grade of P/F (Pass/Fail) and transcripts will denote home-education, non-charter education with P/F grades and credits assigned. No student shall be granted more credit for one (1) year of home or non-chartered schooling than that student would have been able to earn at the School District in one (1) year.
Student must take all State-required assessments. All students must pass the Ohio graduation test and meet the requirements as specified in Board policy prior to graduating from the School District.
Non-chartered or home schooled students must be enrolled in the School District on a full-time basis to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Full-time enrollment is defined as an entire school day.
Athletic eligibility will be determined by OHSAA guidelines and School District athletic policy.
The student’s grade-point average will be established only after s/he has completed two (2) consecutive semesters of attendance at the high school. To be eligible for awards such as Valedictorian or Salutatorian, Distinguished Scholar, Ohio Academic Scholarship, National Honor Society, etc., the student must be enrolled for four (4) consecutive semesters prior to the second semester of the senior year.
