9120 - PUBLIC INFORMATION PROGRAM

The Board of Education believes that all reasonable means should be employed to keep the public informed on matters of importance regarding District policies, finances, programs, personnel, and operations. It is the purpose of this policy to provide the ways and means to accomplish this purpose.

Toward this end, the Board shall provide parents or guardians and other District residents opportunities for orientation and information regarding State regulations and local school procedures, and will utilize, insofar as practical, all appropriate means and media to achieve this end.

The Superintendent shall direct an information program designed to acquaint the citizens of the community and general public with the achievements and the needs of the schools.

The Superintendent shall prepare guidelines and rules to govern the District's response(s) to requests for information and/or access to records, which shall specifically include provisions for:

 A.Making available copies of such school records as may be legally disclosed, establishing the charges to be made for them and the charges for any special services required in order to furnish such copies.

 B.The availability for public use of a printed bulletin which shall briefly explain the "Freedom of Information Act", Public Act No. 442 of the Michigan Public Acts of 1976, and which shall also contain:

  1.A listing of the most common school records which are open to public scrutiny; and

  2.A listing of records whose disclosure is subject to question; and

  3.A listing of the records specifically described in the Act as being exempt from disclosure.

  4.A notification that a copy of the "Bylaws and Policies" of the Board is available for public review in each of the schools' Library/Media Centers.
