The Board of Education recognizes that control of the spread of communicable diseases is of the utmost importance to the general welfare of students and employees of this District, and is essential to the efficient, effective, continuous operation of the educational program in the schools. Examples of casual contact include the following: shaking hands, sneezing, coughing, crying, the sharing of food, beverages, eating utensils, drinking vessels, clothing, chambers (rooms) or vehicles and the communal use of toilet seats, showers, furniture, doorknobs, telephones or office equipment.
Communicable diseases considered to be spread by casual contact include:

| B. | Scarlet fever and other strep infections, | ||
| C. | Whooping cough, | ||
| D. | Mumps, | ||
| E. | Measles, | ||
| F. | Rubella, | ||
| G. | Others designated by the Michigan Department of Public Health. |
In order to protect the health and safety of the students, District personnel and the community at large, the Board requires that all State statutes and Health Department regulations, which pertain to immunization and other means for controlling communicable disease, spread through normal interaction in the school setting, shall be followed.
Based upon the recommendation of a physician, registered nurse or the director or other professional employee of the county health department, the teacher may remove from the classroom and the building administrator may exclude from the building any student who appears to be ill or who may have been exposed to a casual contact communicable disease. However, the teacher or building administrator may act independently if such professional person or representative of the County Health Department is not present in the building when the decision needs to be made.
The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines to carry out this policy which shall include procedures for the removal of students from District property into the care of a responsible adult and the filing of reports required by statute and the regulations of the State Department of Public Health.
