5710 - STUDENT GRIEVANCES

The Board of Education believes that the inculcation of respect for lawful procedures is an important part of the educational process, and recognizes that, as citizens, students have the right to request redress of grievances.

For purposes of this policy, a student grievance shall be any complaint that arises out of actions, procedures and policies of this Board or its employees, or the lack of such policy or procedure.

The Board therefore authorizes that individual or group grievances of students of this District may be brought forward and heard through the District Grievance Procedure (set forth in Board Policy 9130), provided only that students under the age of eighteen (18) years and student groups containing students who are under the age of eighteen (18) years shall be represented in all proceedings by a parent or other adult advocate. Initiation of the Grievance Procedure for students shall normally begin with informal, verbal discussion with the teacher or the support staff person most closely connected to the complaint.
