5200 - ATTENDANCE
The Board of Education as an agency of the State is required to enforce regular attendance of students. The Board recognizes that the presence in the classroom enables the student to participate in instruction, class discussions and other related activities. As such, regular attendance and classroom participation are integral to instilling incentives for the student to excel.
Except for those students and hours exempted under District policy allowing absences for religious instruction or exempted under other provisions of State law, attendance shall be required of all District students during all days and hours that the school is in session or during all attendance sessions to which he/she has been assigned.
The Superintendent shall require, from the parent of each student or from an adult student who has been absent for any reason, a written statement and/or confirmation of the cause for such absence. The Board reserves the right to verify such statements and to investigate the cause of each absence of more than three (3) days duration.
A student may not be required to attend school if it is shown to the satisfaction of the Superintendent that the mental condition of the student is such that he/she cannot benefit from instruction, or that the bodily condition of the student is such as to prevent attendance at school or that he/she is receiving instruction at home from a person certified to teach the branches of education in which instruction is required.
The Board shall report to the Intermediate School District infractions of the law regarding the attendance of students below the age of sixteen (16). Repeated infractions of Board policy requiring the attendance of enrolled students may result in the suspension or expulsion of the student from the District program.

|
The Board shall consider each student assigned to a program of other alternative educational options or other guided learning experiences authorized under Board policy to be in regular attendance for the program, provided that he/she reports daily at the place designated and to the staff member assigned to the program for guidance, and that he/she regularly demonstrates progress toward the objectives of the course of study. |

Students are not to leave campus during the school day unless they check out at the attendance office or if they drive to an off-campus class. Students are not permitted to leave campus for lunch.
