5130 - WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL

The Board of Education affirms that, while Michigan law requires attendance of each student until sixteen (16) years of age, it is in the best interests of both students and the community that they complete the educational program that will equip them with skills and increase their chances for a successful and fulfilling life beyond the schools.

The Board directs that, whenever a student wishes to withdraw from school, efforts shall be made to determine the underlying reason(s) for such action and the resources of the District shall be used, when and as appropriate, to assist the student in reaching his/her career goals.

The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for withdrawal from school which require:

 A.Making counseling services available to any student who wishes to withdraw;

 B.Informing the student of the availability and purpose of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test;

 C.Advising students of their right to return prior to their twentieth (20th) birthday and advising special education students who do not have their high school diploma of their right to return prior to their twenty-fifth (25th) birthday, but only at the start of a semester;

 D.The timely return of all District-owned supplies and equipment in the possession of the student.
