5120 - ASSIGNMENT WITHIN DISTRICT

The Board of Education directs that the assignment of students to schools within this District be consistent with the best interests of students, and the best use of the resources of this District.

The Board reserves the right to establish a school attendance area for each school within the District and to alter its bounds from time to time.

The Superintendent shall develop guidelines for the determination of school attendance areas and shall recommend to the Board the boundaries, and changes in boundaries of all such areas whenever he/she deems it necessary.

Each student of this District shall be assigned to attend the school which serves the school attendance area in which he/she resides. The transfer of a student from his/her assigned school to another within the District shall only be allowed when he/she has been granted the privilege to attend the other school through the District Schools of Choice Program, or other policy or administrative guideline of this District.

The Superintendent shall develop guidelines for the transfer of any student to attend a school outside of his/her school attendance area and shall approve all transfers made under them.

No assignment to schools or attendance schedules shall discriminate against students on the basis of sex, race, religion or national origin.

The Superintendent may assign a student to a school other than that designated by the attendance area when such exception is justified by circumstances, and is in the best interest of the student.

Every effort shall be made to continue a student in the elementary school to which he/she is initially assigned.

Wherever possible, and advisable in the interests of the students, siblings shall be assigned to the same building.

The building principal shall assign students in his/her school to appropriate grades, classes or groups. This action shall be based on consideration of the needs of the student as well as the administration of the school.
