2110 - STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Because in a free society every individual has a right and a responsibility to make choices and decisions for self and for society, the Board of Education believes that the main purpose of education is to nurture and develop to the utmost the potential within each student to make these choices and decisions wisely. Students must be prepared to exercise their rights and responsibilities with wisdom, foresight, and in such a way that both individual and society may benefit if our society is to survive intact and function effectively.
In addition to providing excellent opportunities for formal education, the educational program should guide the indoctrination of each student into adult society. It should particularly emphasize what society expects of the individual and the individual opportunities available to everyone within our society.
Societal expectations to be emphasized are:
| A. | Self Sufficiency - Each citizen is expected to meet his/her own needs to the extent that he/she is able, in his/her own way and without inhibiting the rights and opportunities of others to do the same. | ||
| B. | Wise Individual Choices and Decisions - All citizens are expected to make effective, rational, responsible, ethical choices and decisions regarding how they treat their minds and bodies, how they plan their futures, how they cope with adversities, and how they solve personal, social, and economic problems. | ||
| C. | Societal Responsibilities - All citizens are expected to contribute to the "common good" by actively participating in affairs affecting all members of society. |
The Board believes that the thought and action processes involved in becoming a desirable, ethical member of adult society can be learned if the student is given consistent and appropriate opportunities to learn what the procedures are, see them modeled, practice using them, make corrections as needed and consistently apply them to relevant situations.
