1240 - EVALUATION OF SUPERINTENDENT

Evaluation of the Superintendent of Schools is an important responsibility for the Board of Education. This should be accomplished annually.

Purpose:

 A.promote two-way communications

 B.assist with improving performance

 C.identify strengths and weaknesses

 D.establish goals for the organization

 E.terminate service if required

Some Guideposts:

A.The Superintendent should know the standards against which s/he will be evaluated. The job description of the Superintendent shall be directly related to the evaluation instrument with the Superintendent responsible for recommending compatibility.

B.Evaluation should be a scheduled part of a study or executive session with the Board present.

C.The evaluation should be a composite of the Board opinion with the Board reviewing this with the Superintendent.

D.The evaluation should include accomplishments and constructive suggestions.

E.Both parties should prepare for the evaluation - the Superintendent by conducting a rigorous self examination, and the Board by examining various sources of information. The Board should not limit itself to items in the job description.

F.Each judgement should be supported by as much rationale and objective evidence as possible.

*It is suggested that a new member of the Board not participate in the formal evaluation of the Superintendent for the first six (6) months of his/her elected or appointed term.
